It’s been almost exactly eight years since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final book of J.K. Rowling’s famous series, was published. But that doesn’t mean the drama has to end—with the sheer size of the universe Rowling created, there is always more room for backstory and context.
In honor of the 35th birthday of Dudley Dursley—Harry Potter’s cousin, and basically a spoiled Little Lord Fauntleroy type—Rowling took to the fan site Pottermore to fill out the lives of Dursley and a few other characters with new and interesting details.
Here are some of the things we learned about Dudley’s parents, who raised Harry after his parents died at the hands of Lord Voldemort. (Dudley’s mother, Petunia, is the sister of Harry’s mother Lily.)*The origin of the Dursley name.
*Details of their first meeting with Harry’s parents, which ended poorly with the Dursleys marching out of a restaurant in anger.
*Petunia didn’t want Harry’s mother Lily at her wedding due to years of jealousy.
*Petunia and Vernon didn’t attend the wedding of Harry’s parents.
*Vernon hated Harry so much because he looked like James, his father, who Vernon detested.
*Rowling hates the names Vernon and Petunia, which is why she used them for two of her least favorite characters.
*Rowling considered letting Petunia’s softer side show in her final meeting with Harry, but finally decided it wouldn’t be true to her character.
From Time, here’s how fans can read the new material on Pottermore:
In order to access the latest information on Pottermore, fans must first head to the Cupboard Under the Stairs, where the Dursleys kept Harry at number four, Privet Drive. As alohamora won’t work to unlock the new text, fans might want to look at the side table outside the cupboard first.
