Yeah, I know, it is really hard to believe, right? It’s true. What most consumers don’t know is that there are many free software packages available online that will accomplish most of the things they need in their digital world. You would be surprised.
Let me introduce you to the open source world. There are many hard working programmers who have dedicated many hours of programming to give back to the community. They do this for many reasons. Let’s take Open Office for example. Many people have probably never heard of this Office suite. This is a completely free download that will allow you to open and save Microsoft Office documents.
Open Office has almost the exact same capabilities as Microsoft Office. I have always wondered why so many students are still whipping out that credit card to Microsoft. If you’ve got an assignment that needs to be done, Open Office should be sufficient for your needs. Let’s move on to other pieces of software I think should also be mentioned in this article.
There’s a nice backup utility called Cobian backup. This nifty backup utility will allow you to do many things. First and foremost, it will allow you to compress your backup and send over your network. Heck, you can even FTP this thing anywhere you want. And here’s the kicker, it’s completely free.
Ok, so maybe you don’t want to back anything up. Maybe you’re wondering if there is some sort of free anti virus. You’ve got it! You can find a slew of free anti virus programs that are readily available to home users. While there are many free anti virus programs, I still think Avast is a pretty good one. I love the on access scanner. This software will almost always stop a virus dead in its tracks before you execute it.
As you can see, there are many solutions available to you. So next time you’re about to whip that credit card out at Best Buy, make sure you do a thorough Google search for an alternative. More than likely you’ll find something you need.
